Community and Commitment, Minute for Minute
Episode 376
Here, at Brooklyn Youth Sports Club, values are built in young people each moment as they enter into a study-to-play contract, minute for minute. Commitment,...
One question can make a military kid’s first day feel like a beginning, not a loss.
For military-connected students, back to school often means starting over. A new school, new hallways, new faces, and no one who knows their name yet. The Start With Hi campaign gives students, parents, and educators the tools to make that first hello a little easier.

A printable school-discovery activity that helps students explore a new campus through small, confidence-building prompts. From finding key spaces to meeting helpful people and saying their first hellos. Designed to make navigating a new school feel like an adventure rather than an obstacle.
Printable prompt cards for classrooms, counselors, welcome packets, orientations, or family events. Each card gives students a simple question or action to spark a first conversation, share something about themselves, or invite someone else into a new first. Designed to feel simple and approachable for all ages.

Military-connected students move an average of six to nine times before they graduate. Every move means a new school, a new community, and the work of starting over. Research shows that students who feel welcomed and connected at school perform better academically, experience less anxiety, and are more likely to stay engaged. A single conversation can be the start of that connection.
Military Child Education Coalition®️ has spent 28 years helping military-connected students navigate these moments. Start With Hi is one more way we are putting practical tools in the hands of the people who show up for them every day.
For 26 years, MCEC has been the nation’s leading advocate for the 1.5 million military-connected children who deserve stability, opportunity, and support. Your gift powers evidence-based programs and Purple Star Schools that help every child thrive wherever the mission takes them.
