Military Child Education Coalition Announces New Board Members: Lt. Gen. (Ret.) Dan Karbler and Mary Stork of USAA
The Military Child Education Coalition® (MCEC®) proudly announces the appointment of two distinguished leaders to its Board of Directors: Lieutenant General (Retired) Daniel Karbler, former Commander of the U.S. Army Space and Missile Defense Command, and Mary Stork, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Retirement & Investment Solutions at USAA. Their service-focused leadership and personal connections to the military community make them invaluable additions to MCEC’s mission.

Lt. Gen. (Ret.) Dan Karbler led operations and personnel across 23 locations worldwide during his 37-year Army career. As the senior commander for two of the Army’s most remote garrisons — Fort Greely, Alaska, and Kwajalein Atoll — he prioritized military families’ well-being, with a strong emphasis on school quality, healthcare, and community.
“As a father of military-connected children who each attended three high schools, I know the stress that frequent moves can bring,” said Karbler. “MCEC meets families at that intersection of challenge and opportunity. I’m proud to serve an organization that helps military children thrive, wherever they go.”

Mary Stork, a Certified Financial Planner® and Certified Wealth Strategist®, brings decades of experience in financial services and product leadership — experience deeply relevant to the lives of military families. She is known for her member-first philosophy and for building trusted solutions for military families through her work at USAA.
“As a military spouse and mother, I’ve seen how deeply transitions affect children. Joining MCEC’s board is a privilege and a calling,” said Stork. “I believe in the power of community and continuity, and I’m honored to support an organization that strengthens both for our military kids.”
Admiral Cecil D. Haney (Ret.), MCEC Board Chair, also praised the board’s depth and commitment:
“Our Board of Directors is so grateful to have Mary and Dan join us. I am proud of how our board is dedicated to supporting the strategy and execution of the MCEC mission. The board plays a crucial role in shaping programs that directly impact the children and families of our military. I am so grateful for their time, talents, and unwavering belief in our mission.”
“We welcome Mary and Dan with open arms and open hearts,” said Mary Bier, MCEC President and CEO. “During my initial conversations with each of them, it was clear that their commitment to military families wasn’t just professional — it was personal,” said Bier. “Their lived experiences will make our board even stronger, ensuring that we continue to evolve alongside the real-world needs of the families we serve.”
