Transition is hard. Families know the challenge of packing up, moving to a new location, and starting over – over and over again. Changing schools and the disruption to the educational journey is often cited as the most challenging part of the military lifestyle.
To help mitigate this challenge, the Military Child Education Coalition collaborated with the Center for Public Research and Leadership at Columbia University to produce resources for parents and educators. A report detailing the impact of student mobility on military-connected and other highly mobile students, The Challenges of Supporting Highly Mobile Military-Connected Children in School Transitions – the Current Environment, details the impact and is the result of extensive research and interviews.
These resources were created to ease the stress of school transitions during COVID-19, but we feel confident they should prove helpful beyond this season. These tools contain links to useful resources and strategies, along with example forms and letters, to support parent/school communications.
A second report, Mitigating the Impact of School Mobility: An Effective Practices Model and Guide for Educators, combines the research from the first report with stakeholder feedback to create a MODEL for student transition, along with a TOOLKIT of strategies, templates, and checklists — practical tools — developed to help teachers, principals, counselors, and district and state personnel more effectively serve transitioning mobile students.
Each of the tools in the toolkit is detailed in brief 2-3 minutes videos, designed to assist school leaders in integrating them into their school environments.
